Smart MaaS – a modular mobility service platform

Today, there are already comprehensive solutions or APPs that integrate several different modes of transport. However, if a user changes the transport network, a specific application either does not work at all or only with limited functionality. This fragmentation is exacerbated by the foreseeable developments in the areas of the Internet of Things (IoT), Smart City, electromobility and autonomous transport systems, which also implement their own IoT platforms and solutions for their functionalities and which must be brought together for comprehensive mobility applications. Lightweight and standardized mobility services will be needed in the near future, especially in combination with intelligent (smart) buildings and apartments for more advanced scenarios.

In order to meet the requirements described, SmartMaaS is building a correspondingly open, service-oriented, highly modular mobility service platform based on standardized web and FIWARE technologies, the SmartMaaS platform. The purpose of this platform is to facilitate the opening up, interoperability and utilization of existing relevant services in order to bring them together and make them marketable, following the example of a marketplace in new, interzonal, smart mobility services. The SmartMaaS platform builds on domain-neutral FIWARE infrastructures and technologies developed under EU funding programs as a service-oriented generic services platform. In addition to application management functions, it also offers management functions. These functionalities are supplemented with standardized technologies from the semantic web as well as linked data approaches.


FIWARE framework
FIWARE is a curated framework of open source platform components that can be combined with other third-party platform components to accelerate the development of smart solutions.
Mobility broker
Mobility Broker bundles and networks all mobility services in Aachen and the city region on a digital platform. Customers log in once and then can book all offers, use a customer card and finally receive an invoice.
Mobility Plattform
Internet-based platform for transport services. From mere travel information and booking to the organization of the entire travel chain, there are digitally diverse new manifestations which offer new opportunities for passenger transport.
Market place
A virtual place / market space within a parent data network within which virtual business transactions are performed.
A programming interface, API, is a part of a program that is made available by a software system to other programs for connection to the system.
Mobile ticketing is an application of mobile commerce. E-tickets substitute tickets, tickets or other previously customary documents with information sent to a mobile phone or similar device and electronically stored there.


Use cases

To demonstrate the capabilities of the platform, two use cases are evaluated

USE CASE 1: First use case is linked to the “MobilityBroker” platform and app, which already provides a multimodal offer in the Aachen region today. The existing public transport and sharing providers will be supplemented with a long-distance bus service as well as with taxi providers. For these extended services, the users will be able to book and pay encroached. This concept could be transferred to other cities and regions. The project is open to the cooperation with other domain-specific projects as well as with new service providers.
USE CASE 2: The second use case focuses on communities and companies that want to motivate their residents / employees to have an environmentally friendly mobility approach. The Smart MaaS platform will allow service providers, e.g. via apps, to deliver to their users push messages on their smartphones about high levels of pollution. This can result in users choosing alternative transportation, replacing for example their own car with a carpooling option. This new approach can then be rewarded with bonuses, compensation or reduction of travel costs.



Integrated mobility

Smart MaaS builds an open platform for integrated mobility and a reference topology for the smart platform in the area of integrated mobility in cities and regions, building on extensive preparatory work by the consortium partners and their specific expertise. This is the basis for scalable MaaS (mobility as a service) in cities, communities and regions. The project is driven by a strong focus on the actual and concrete needs of cities and regions as well as new and established transport operators, and will therefore cooperate intensively and collaboratively with the relevant market players.


An open platform for new business models

The SmartMaaS platform will enable existing, previously largely isolated, often fragmented data sources and applications to be securely combined and marketed using FIWARE and semantic web technologies as standards-compliant web services, and in any environment.

The SmartMaaS platform makes it much easier for external APP developers to implement new ideas, applications, and business models based on the platform. Furthermore, legacy business models and specific markets continue to be supported without major changes to existing software structures, as FIWARE technologies are a platform for platforms. The technical merger of the isolated platforms into a unified portal supports the federal municipal structure, allowing local providers easy and barrier-free access to important data infrastructures, as well as the portability of the solutions to other cities as well as service structures and markets.
